Borough Burblings 15 January 2024

The new year has started with several “light” showers; the greens were duck ponds on a couple of occasions and yet, incredibly, we got off pretty lightly compared to other parts of Bendigo and central Victoria.

Congratulations go to Wade Roberts defeating Con O’Shea in the Club Championship 25/19. Wade got out to a 10/0 start before Con got going. Con was slowly reeling Wade in and got to 18/19 before Wade closed out the match. The Ladies championship is to be held this coming Thursday (18/1) at 10.00am between Pam Hughes and Kay Tranter.

Last Monday, Tattersalls Bowling Club visited us on their annual Bendigo visit. After Sunday’s deluge everybody expected that no play would be possible. We played on the carpet and it was running pretty well. Tatts came back the next day to play bowls as the club they were meant to play at had more rain than us and their greens were closed. A big thank you to all the Eaglehawk members who helped out by playing or working around the club. The Tatts people were rapt that they got to play bowls.

Mid-week Pennant resumed this morning and what a start to the calendar year we had. All teams got up – the first time this season. The Ones were at Woodbury and had a solid 3 rinks / 25 shots victory. The win sees them in fourth position on the ladder tied with Inglewood. The Three’s had a one shot victory (2 rinks) at home against White Hills and the Sixers had their first win of the season with a 7 shot victory, also at home, against Woodbury. The President had to shout afterwards, since he is still in Austria, I suppose he yodelled.

Next Monday (22/1/24), the Ones are away in a crucial game at Inglewood. At home, the Three’s play Marong and the Sixers are up against White Hills.

Weekend pennant resumes on Saturday. At home the Ones play Castlemaine and the Three’s play Bendigo. The Sixers are off to Inglewood. On Sunday afternoon, The Premiers are against Bendigo at South. This is due to the region trialling a “charity round” concept with all the Premier league playing at the same venue. There are two games in the morning and two in the afternoon. Our game is scheduled to start at 2.00pm. The idea of a charity round died over 10 years ago in Bendigo through lack of interest and lack of support from all of the Bendigo clubs so we will see how this goes.

Our best wishes go to Bob Rogers who had a serious setback that saw him in hospital in Melbourne. He should be back in Bendigo hospital pretty soon.

Our thoughts are with the family of Ken Gloster OAM who died last week. While Ken was never an Eaglehawk member, he did a huge amount of work for the betterment of bowls in the days of BDBA (Bendigo District Bowls Association).

Go the Borough!
