Borough Burblings 14 February

The final round of weekend pennant is upon us and we have one team playing in the finals. The weekend Sixers are twenty points clear in fourth spot on the ladder and will be playing Golden Square in the first semi-final.

Last weekend the Premiers continued their late season good form with a strong 21 shot / 3 rinks win over Golden Square which sees them in 6th position on the ladder. The Ones went down with all rinks to the second placed Strathfieldsaye by 19 shots. Like the previous week against Flat, they got close late in the game, but could not keep the good bowls going. The Three’s had a good 10 shot / 3 rinks win against Square to climb into sixth position and away from the bottom. The Sixers went down by 5 shots against Castlemaine but, together with other results going their way, did enough to secure the finals spot.

This week the Premiers travel to East in a game which has no significance for either side. We cannot be relegated and East will play in the first semi-final. Still it is always good to defeat East and finish the season on a high. The Ones must win to have a chance of getting off the bottom. They play East at home and have to hope that ladder leading Marong defeats White Hills. The Threes are also at home against Serpentine; a win and they could very well ruin Serp’s chances of playing in the second semi-final. The Sixers travel to Kangaroo Flat in a tune up for the finals.

On Monday the Mid-week pennant season concluded. None of our teams made the finals. The Ones lost to Flat by 14 shots / 1 rink and finished in 6th position. The Threes had a terrific 19 shot / 2 rinks win over Castlemaine to finish in 7th spot. The Sixers went down to Marong by just 1 shot (1 rink) to finish their season. You could say that they are the strongest team in mid-week pennant since they are holding up the entire competition.

This coming Sunday the Regional play-offs commence at Maryborough Highlands Society. We have one team playing; the Ladies triples team of Jan Robertson, Pam Hughes and Kaye Rowe. They are playing against a Moama team skipped by Olivia Cartwright with the game starting at 10.00am. I am sure that any support for the girls at Maryborough will be greatly appreciated.
