Borough Burblings 20 February

A mighty effort on Sunday saw our team of Jan Robertson, Pam Hughes and Kaye Rowe (s) become the 2024 BCG Bowls Region Ladies Triples champions by defeating the Olivia Cartwright skipped Moama team at Maryborough Highlands 19 /16. The girl’s started slowly without letting Moama get too far ahead. They dropped a six before getting four of them back the next end. Moama stayed slightly ahead until the 16th end when our team drew level 16 all. Two shots to Eaglehawk on the 17th end had the pressure on Moama. Jan Robbo drew an early close one to really make it hard, a slight hiccup from Kaye when her (very good) bowl moved the kitty closer to Moama’s clos(ish) second shot, but Olivia had a difficult shot to get to the kitty and was wide. I think it took a little while for the result to sink in with our team. They will now represent the region, and Eaglehawk of course, at the State championships at Bendigo East in April.

The weekend pennant season spluttered to a close on Saturday. The only team to win was the Division One team who defeated East by 11 shots / 2 rinks. Unfortunately it was not enough to get off the bottom as we finished behind White Hills by just two points – one rink! It would be unjust to blame everything on last Saturday when the real problem was probably losing the first seven games. If we get relegated, we will have to put our nose to the grindstone to get back up to Division One.

The other sides all lost; the Premiers by 11 shots with 1.5 rinks, the Threes by 7 sevens and only 1 rink, and the Sixers stumbled badly going down by 23 shots and winning only one rink.

This week, of course, the finals commence and our Div Six team are playing Golden Square at Kangaroo Flat’s C (or back) green. They only finished 1 point behind Square so the game should be pretty even. It has been a mighty effort by the Sixers to make the finals as the team make-up has changed constantly throughout the season with people being unavailable in the higher grades.

I note sadly that another former member, Eileen Huddle, passed away recently. She was a member from 1986 until age caught up with her in 2012 and she retired from bowls. She was a pretty handy bowler and participated in many things at the club in her time there. Our thoughts are with her family.

Go the Borough!
