Borough Burblings 24 January

Congratulations go to Pam Hughes for winning the Ladies Club Championship for the second consecutive year, defeating Kay Tranter 25/12. Pam got out to a big start and while Kay came back a little bit, was never seriously troubled. Hopefully Pam can win the Champion of Champions, also for the second year running.

Weekend Pennant resumed with mixed results. The Premiers were outclassed with all rinks going down to Bendigo on Sunday. The Ones got off to a terrible start against Castlemaine, fought back to be within about 10 shots near the end and ended winning only one rink. The Threes and Sixers had good wins; the Threes with a 2.5 rinks/27 shot win against Bendigo and the Sixers won away against Inglewood by 9 shots/2 rinks. The Sixers are in fourth position on the ladder.

On Monday our teams could not repeat their previous week’s effort with all going down. The One’s had one rink well beaten even though the other two won, but still stayed in fourth spot. The Threes lost all rinks and the Sixers with one rink winning lost by 13 shots.

This coming Saturday, the only team at home are the Threes who play Heathcote. The Premiers are off interstate with the game against Moama, the Ones have another must win game against North and the Sixers are in a similar position with a trip to Heathcote.

On Monday, the Ones are at home to Golden Square, the Threes travel to East and the Sixers are off to Castlemaine.

This last week has been quite sad with the sudden death of Michael O’Shea – Con’s brother. Michael and Tricia came to our tournaments a lot. Our thoughts are with Con and Tricia. Also we had the news that two former members have passed away.

Connie Hollingworth died in early December at the age of 90. She joined in 1993 and remained a very active member until she and Tony moved to Bairnsdale to be closer to their daughter in 2009. Had they stayed in Bendigo, I have little doubt that her name would have been put forward for life membership such was the work she did around the club. She also was President of the Ladies section in her time at the club.

Hugh Pappin died just a week ago. Hughey joined in 1998 and remained a member until 2015 when his failing eyesight meant that he could not play bowls anymore. On the green he played in the lower grades, he had only one shot really – running through the head, but he played it well as his winning record was quite good. He had good support from his wife, Lil, who died a few years ago.

Our thoughts also go the the families of both Connie and Hugh.

Go the Borough!
