Borough Burblings 8 February

The Pennant season is approaching its end and it is safe to say that our season in most divisions has been disappointing. This time last year all of our weekend teams were in the four or had a good chance of making it; this year only one team is in the four. It is a similar situation for the Monday teams; only the Division one team has a chance of making the finals.

The Premiers cannot make the four, but at least cannot be relegated. They are sitting in 7th position on the ladder and can only make it hard for those teams still trying to make it. They did this last week with a strong 16 shot / 3 rinks win over Kangaroo Flat, which has made it that little bit harder for the Flat.

The Saturday Ones have had a strong win and a disappointing loss in the last two weeks. They are still on the bottom and facing relegation. Two wins over strong opposition will give them a good chance of getting off the bottom. The Saturday Threes are still anchored to the bottom, but are only one or two points behind seventh and sixth spot.

The only weekend team in the four at the moment are the Sixers. They are 4th, 21 points clear. A win this week and a finals spot is guaranteed.

The Monday Ones have lost their last two matches and slipped to sixth spot. With only one game to go, they can still make it but a win is essential along with some luck with other results. The Monday Threes are 7th and cannot be relegated. The Monday Sixers are still battling along and will finish last.

This coming Saturday the Premiers host Golden Square and can ruin their slim chances of making the four. The Ones are at Strathfieldsaye and will have a tough game against the second placed team. Needless to say, a win is vital. The Threes are at Golden Square and a win will see them jump over the sixth placed Square. The Sixers are at home to ladder leaders Castlemaine. As I said earlier, they need to win to secure a spot in the finals and if they want to win the pennant, they are going to have beat Castlemaine at some point, so it may as well be this week.

On Monday, the Ones travel to Kangaroo Flat in a must win game. If they lose, then the season is over. The Three’s are at home to Castlemaine and the Sixers host Marong to finish their seasons.

Last Sunday saw the Champion of Champions competition begin in hotter conditions than we seen for a while. Our entrants, unfortunately, have not made to the semi’s. Last years Ladies Champion of Champions, Pam Hughes, defeated East’s Helen Clough 25/22 before just failing against White Hill’s Carmel Jansen 24/25. Our Mens entrant. Wade Roberts faced Strath’s Ben Probert and after a poor start, went down 17/25. You have to bowl pretty well just to make it the this particular competition.
